Time Management strategies of 3 hours during exam time

Time Management strategies for 3 hours duration exam

Time management is an important issue faced by students, especially in CA exams. This is the major reason for scoring less marks, while preparing for the best, because time management can be one of the worst aspects of an exam.It is very important for students to mange their time effectively, so that not a single minute can go wasted. Following are some time management strategies which might help you to score better :-

1. Don’t avoid the 15 minutes reading time which you get before you start writing. Many of you enter the exam hall a few minutes late but you don’t actually realize how important this 15 minutes is.Utilize this 15 minutes to the fullest. Read the question paper properly and thoroughly and make sure you sum up the important points relating to the answers in your mind.

2. Make sure that you complete reading the whole question paper in 15 minutes. Many students try reading all the questions in the 15 minutes but they aren’t able to. For this I would suggest you to atleast read all the questions before you start writing.

3. Make a handy choice on whether to opt for MCQs before or after the subjective answers. This is very important for planning your time and getting the best out of the MCQs.

4. Make a choice of the questions you want to opt in the reading time itself. The reason is that we often while writing the exam are unable to make a proper choice of the question we want to opt, may be because of the sub-parts that it contains. For instance, after we start writing the answer for question no. 3, we realise that opting question no. 6 instead of 3 will be a better choice. This results in a wastage of time.

5. Divide your time into 2 slots. You have 3 hours in your hand. What you can do is, divide your time in 2 slots, one of2 hours and other of 1 hour. Also you have to opt 5 questions in total, of which question number 1 is compulsory. Try to give a maximum of 20 minutes to each question (“Maximum” and not “exact” twenty minutes). By doing this, you will be still left with 180 minutes to complete your MCQs, lengthy answers and revision of your answers. In case of practical papers, you don’t have MCQs. In such a case, try to give maximum 20 minutes to every answer. Still if you are unable to complete an answer within that time, you can complete that in the remaining hours.

6. Maintain your speed from the very beginning. Many students think that they have ample of time for writing, so they start like turtles. But when they start writing, and reach the middle of the paper they realize that they have very less time for completing the paper. It is rather advisable that, you speed up from the very beginning.

7. Opt those questions first that you know properly. You have the option to opt for question no. 3 first and then question no. 2 (or the sequence as per your choice). This will save some time because we waste time in thinking about the answer of the question that we don’t know, ignoring the questions that we know properly. So answering smartly is a must.

8. Ask for new scripts before you need them. If you are cramming it all in and writing hurridly, it can be incredibly frustrating to wait for the invigilator to shuffle their way over to you with more paper.
If you come to know before hand that you will be needing more paper then raise your hand up while you keep writing.

9. Never avoid the last minute revision. It is equally important that you revise your paper thoroughly before submitting the same. By this, you may get to know about the question that you’ve missed out (if any) or any corrections that you need to make.

10. Complete your paper first before helping others. Many of you waste time in showing answers to the person sitting in the immediate next bench or in front. Remember that you need to concentrate on your own paper because time and tide waits for none.

11. Keep spare pens or the other stationeries that you need. Being CA students, this point may sound kidish but it’s a fact that most of you waste time in arranging pens with other students if your pen runs out of ink and you don’t have a spare one. You starting panicking if you don’t get the same. Also you can carry an extra calculator and submit the same with the invigilator before the exam starts.

12. Don’t leave an exam early. The temptation to leave exam is irresitible and most of you step out of the exam hall once you think that you have finished writing. But this mistake can be a reason of spoiling the paper. Recheck your answers twice or thrice or as many number of times as possible, till you are satisfied with the paper.
