CBIC invites Law Interns to assist the Directorate in defending matters in front of the Supreme Court

The Indirect Taxes Internship Scheme, 2021 has been announced by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

The CBIC stated, “The Board/Ministry has approved an Internship Scheme to hire Law students/Law graduates to help the Directorate in defending cases before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”

The goal of this programme is to harness the energy and passion of young law students and graduates to improve the quality of indirect tax case defence. This will allow them to practise their talents in real-time, in real-life scenarios. They will also benefit from the experience of senior department officers, who will provide them with significant hands-on experience in the field of indirect taxation.

The Directorate of Legal Affairs will be in charge of putting the scheme into action, as well as selecting and deploying Interns. DLA will solicit applications directly from premier colleges/NLUs, as well as publicise the plan through the department’s website, media, and direct contact with top legal schools.

The Board announced that 10 interns will be chosen from each of the two categories: students who have finished the second year of a three-year LLB programme or students pursuing the third year of a five-year integrated LLB programme. Students who have completed their LLB degree and have been registered with the Bar Council for less than two years will be allowed to intern for one or two months, depending on the requirements of the students and college regulations. Interns and students who have completed their LLB degree and have been registered with the Bar Council for less than two years will be paid a stipend of 5000/- per month. Graduates will be allowed to intern for six months and would be compensated with Rs. 15,000 per month.

The Directorate of Legal Affairs will offer a Certificate of Internship upon satisfactory completion of the internship.
