The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has discovered an iPhone stockpile being smuggled into the country.

On November 26, 2021, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) inspected two consignments after developing precise intelligence. These shipments had arrived from Hong Kong at the Air Cargo Complex (ACC) of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. The goods were declared as “memory cards” in the import documents. However, a physical examination revealed that the consignments actually contained the following:

As a result, a total of 3,646 (three thousand sixty-six) iPhone-13 mobile phones were discovered in the intercepted consignments. The above-mentioned mobile phones and Apple smart watch were seized under the Customs Act of 1962 because they had not been declared. The total value of the seized goods is approximately Rs. 42.86 crore, while the declared value is only Rs. 80 lakh.

iPhone 13 models will be available in India beginning in September 2021, with a starting price of Rs. 70,000/- and some higher-end models costing up to Rs. 1,80,000/-. Mobile phone imports into India are subject to an effective Customs Duty of approximately 44 percent.
