Senior Bureaucrat Vivek Johri appointed as the CBIC Chairman
Vivek Johri, a senior bureaucrat, has been appointed Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs by the government (CBIC).
Johri, an Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer from the 1985 batch, is currently a member of the board. His appointment was approved by the Cabinet Appointments Committee. He was appointed because former chairman M Ajit Kumar’s term expires in November 2021.
The change comes as budget preparations pick up steam, and one of the new chairman’s first tasks will be to carry out the government’s promised customs duty rejig aimed at boosting local manufacturing activities. The indirect tax administration is also debating a GST slab revision in order to increase revenue collection.
